Default Ollie Edwards Tape Wing Caddis

Looking for opinions on another fly ...the Tape Wing Caddis a la Oliver Edwards. Before I start getting involved with another slightly trick pattern from the Yorkshireman before the end of the season , can anyone advise if they have tied it and used it much .....a rarely discussed pattern ?

Spider, I don't know that particular pattern, but I have been told that regular cellotape is destroyed by water...

As an exercise, I did tie a damsel that had tape wings and the veins were cock hackle fibres - I've never fished it but it looks good!

Spider,

I think it's a cracking pattern for faster water, be sure to color the tape with a permanent marker, after a couple of trouts all the CDC from under the wing is gone.
If they are on caddis it still catches fish just as good without the CDC.
I don't think it's a real fish pullar as the Klink and the RM baloon pop caddis, other then that a great fly..
I always carry a couple of them arround when i hit the streams..

Works well with masking tape.

Prepare the feather ie take off the flue and then press carefully to the sticky side of the tape. Leave a few seconds and then cut a shape of the feather stuck to the shape making sure there is no tape showing. Fold and attach to pre prepared hook with chosen body (turkey quill, goose quill dubbing etc. Apply head of cdc, hare fur etc. tie off. Bob's your uncle, fanny's your aunt. Feathers such as teal, mallard make excellent sedge wings. Try to match your local ones with feathers you have.

The whole point of the OE tape wing caddis is NOT to use a single feather stuck to tape. CDC fibres are ‘flocked’ to the sticky side of a piece of ‘magic’ tape to take the ‘stickynes’s off, and the other side is coloured with a pen(s) to match the hatch (not that important really as the fish will only see the underside). He avoids the feather because it usually delaminates and comes adrift after a short while anyway.

I think you'll find that the type of tape used by Ollie is not normal everyday Sellotape, but the clearer waterproof version. When I bought my last spool, (from Sainsbury's !) it had a holographic wrap around its core to show how clear it was.

As my previous post - its scotch Magic Tape which appears matte (not see through) on the roll, and is also a lot thicker than standard sellotape.

It can be written on with standard ink unlike sellotape, and is definitely not waterproof!

Generally like Ollie's tyings but never found much use for an adult caddis imitation. For me it's the larva, pupa, or emerger as the important stages from the trout fisher's perspective. I'm sure adult caddis imitations have their occasional day, but to my eyes, it's not much different to imitating and adult large stonefly - a nice idea, but ultimately a foodsource that only occasionally becomes available to fish.
