Default Driffield Dun

Hello Everyone. Does any one know where this fly (see link and scoll down)was published originally?

Also does anyone have a step by step for this. I can't find one.

It's quite interesting as I fish Driffield Beck a lot and have had much success with a fly tied with a white tail, white wink in white buck tail and a grey or grizzly hackle..

Dry flies for trout and grayling

Thank you so much chaps,

Polly

i dont know of an SBS for it, someone might but here you go..
tye the thread on about a third of the way down on the shank, then bring it half way back up, tye in the wing feather slips facing forwards..
bring the thread to the tail end tye the tail and rib in at the same time to save bulk.. bring the thread to tail end, dub it rib it tye off, then tye in the hackle, wrap it behind the wing then half a turn of hackle infront.. when i say half a turn make sure its underneath the fly and not at the top. you can tye them with hackle in the front but this brings the wing up.. so it depends where you want the wing.. tye off the hackle
add a little dub in the front if its a bit bare.. job done!
very simple

As a Driffield lad born and bred you would imagine I would be able to help you out, unfortunately I know absolutely nothing about the Driffied dun.

I've caught loads of trout, grayling and chub from the beck in my youth though, mostly on handlined maggots

Hi here is a link to it, but not a step by step.

Bernard of YTYE flies added it to his site because I asked him to tie me some up as starlings wing was hard to come by and he is a fantastic fly dresser.

I think I read about the either in Eric Horsfall Turners Anglers Cavalcade or one of John Roberts books and was intrigued. Its not the first fly on my list but it certainly catches fish.

Bernard put a thread on the The FDG forums general section about it in March 09 & had a few replies, but nothing definitive.

The earliest publication I've got the dressing in is either 'Modern Trout Fly Dressing' (R.Wooley, 1932) or 'Trout Flies, A Discussion and a Dictionary (A. Courtney Williams, 1932). However neither book credits the originator.

The Driffield Anglers Club was founded in 1833 so I would imagine it was invented some time after that, with a leaning towards to the end of the 19th/ beginning of the 20th century because of the Halford/Marryat influence on chalk stream dry fly patterns and tactics.
