Default Melvin Shield Bug

A few of the Sonnaghan lately on Melvin have been munching on shield bugs. They have really vivid orange legs and a sooty body.

I am hoping this will wrinkle a few out when the lake settles down a bit.

It's amazing how different Shield beetles vary in colouration from lake to lake. Another lake I fish the beetles are a complete rusty orange colour

Basically a George variant but I am hoping it half resembles the bug.

What do you think, will it work??

Tail: Orange bronze mallard
Body: Orange olive
Rib: Flat gold
Body hackle: Black sooty olive
Legs: Orange cock pheasant
False hackle: Orange GF
Head Hackle: Black sooty olive

Don't know much about shield bugs, but that has got to bring up trout! Very nice.

Hi There

Like your tie mate

Ive noticed alot of shield bugs on local waters here (Scotland) infact was out on friday on Loch Earn took four browns and three rainbows there were shield bugs in the water and the Clan Chief did alot of damage

The browns i returned but one of the rainbows had a shield bug it its belly. Ive found the Clan chief does well when shield bug and heather flies are on the water ?? Both have orange bits assuming the Clan chief fools them ??

I think a Doobry with a set of good orange legs on it would also be close enough and would work for a pulling fly . Static and dry ?? Hmmmm thats another question

Thanks mate,
That certainly is interesting because I know the Clan Chief is a fantastic fly towards the back end of the season on the same lake. I never associated it with the shield beetles, but come to think of it, it has almost everything you would be looking for in a fly to fool them when the bug is on the water (maybe an extra turn of orange i'm thinking or a few orange legs).

Like every thing else, when its in front of your face you wont see it

Thanks for that.
