Default How much UV material is too much?

Hi All, I'm using UV strands from Craig Barr in some patterns, but I'm worried about how much is good and what is too much.

Any ideas?

Best Regards

Stuart

Hi, mostly emergers and some size 16 midge patterns.

Regards

It can have numerous other variables as well, such as the time of/or availability of U.V. in natural light. Depth at which the flies are fished, water clarity.

There have been several books written about this subject, one of the most recent is "The New Scientific Angling - Trout & Ultra Violet Vision" by Reed F. Curry, who has before now posted on this forum.

I use HE and PTN on 16's. Usually tie in 3 strands of Craig Barrs UV rib either side of the tail and trim off to about 3mm long.

I also add 3 of 4 strands of a similar length to the butt of my Shuttlecock CDC's.

On larger flies, 12 crunchers, I form a small thorax with the same material and for Diawal Bachs I make a full underbody of UV and rib it with peacock herl. This then gets a counter rib of 3lb copolymer.

That's an interesting idea for the underbody - how successful have those been ?

I have done well with a thread buzzer ribbed with this stuff and also use some in the tail of long marabou lures where it has been successful.

I first developed a DB with a gold underbody a few years ago for fishing in bright conditions. The hearl "shrouds" the gold and as a result the gold is not so much"in your face". It still works.
The UV version was another variation on a theme and it aslo works well for me.
I generally use them on the middle dropper.
