Default CDC and Elk

Had a feeling this easy looking pattern would be trickier than Hans W makes it look. Caught a nice trout with a sedge the other night, my first ever, so have decided to tie up a few of these to see if they work for me. That way they can be put down as a necessity when the season finishes and tying starts in november, to lift the misery of the close season.

Thats where it got tricky!

I am using deer hair that is supposedly fine for caddis ( says so on the pack ) , nice and fine ....but that bloody stuff twists around the hook when I tie it in. Any advice? I am using UTC thread.

Also, does the colour of the CDC matter at all ?

Thanks.

Try a round thread like uni. Also don't let deer hair twist. You can be a bit rough with deer hair i found hold it where you want it and don't let it twist and get some good thread wraps in.

Have just tried Uni thread , dark drown with dark brown deer hair and , er brown CDC. So it looks....brown.

Better effort, although the deer hair still seems to be a bit moveable around the hook top, even after varnishing the thread wrap.

Shpuld this pattern be ginked before use, no ?

Might grease up the CDC underneath.

How good a pettern is it ?

Oh pants, it didnt work. I have just been able to remove most of the deer hair after tying

Follow Hans step by step on Danica and that should help.
Use a bit of force when tying in
Or try a synthetic material.
A customer asked about using my Funky Silky for Cdc & Elk so before i sold him some to be used making up Cdc & Elk i tied a couple up.
This is the result.

Cdc & Silky Size 14

Floats well as well

Similar problem when i tried these last week. i found Elk too light in colour and although the fish took it i felt it was lacking something. Changed to deer and worked much better. I also found both hair type with the CDC floated well until taken by a fish. then a quick squeeze in an amadou patch sorted out the problem.

Here is what I have learned from the experience.

Don't use to much hair. When you have selected the amount you think looks right between your fingers take about of 2/3 of that amount and you should have enough. Easy to use to much and it will flare out when tied in.

Use the pinch and loop method to tie in the hair and pull straight down not sideways.

Step by Step Instructions for Winging using the Pinch and Loop Method

If it is still rolling then compensate for the roll by placing the hair slightly of center. Then when it rolls it should go where you want it.
