tie in your rib before you wind the hackle. There is no need to rib over it. When winding the hackle work forwards and leave enough space for a few winds + a neat head, getting the proportions right will come with time

Hope this helps

... unless you're trying to do a "palmered" fly i.e. with the hackle wound in open turns from head to tail...?

Eh?

By the sounds of it, Bobz is talking about palmering.... how else would he get hackle caught during the winding?

A common problem bobz. No magic fix at all I'm afraid.... as Arkle says, practice makes perfect.

no reason! the (reason) for this is to help hold the hackle in place
and strengthen it so yes there is a reason.. tye the the palmering hackle at the head, wind backwards to the tail end then counter wind your rib..
you will get used to it easy if you learn the proper methods from good tyers.
have a look at Davie Mcphail on youtube
good luck mate

Default Have a watch of this -might help?

Hi Bobz,

Have a look at this video from You tube. Davie McPhail has a load of this sort of thing on You Tube, great for picking up tying techniques. Keep practicing as it will click eventually.

Cheers

If its palmered hackle with an over rib, tie the hackle stalk behind the head, wind clockwise down to the bend, take the wire or tinsel rib and wind it through the hackle with a few wiggles as you go to avoid trapping hackle fibres. Sometimes called "worrying", as in dog with a furry thing. This is a good starting point.

An afterthought, maybe try stripping the fibres off one side of the hackle.
