Default Grayling

Morning all,
I am thinking about my winter fishing and having caught the fly tying bug. Or in my case full blown disease. I would like to tie some flies for winter Grayling. I am getting better at tying so any suggestions on what are good Grayling flies to attempt to tie would be gratefull. I know anything pink works well so the most obvious is a pink shrimp.

Please add your own best Grayling fly for me to attempt to tie.

Many Thanks

Ian

Ian

This is a good place to start. I think Dave posted it as a SBS on the tying forum.

HI Vince,
The Killer bug Dave did is excellent.
I was reading an article about the Killer Bug and it is said that it was named the Killer Bug because that was what Sawyer made it to do catch Grayling so they could kill them. Grayling was classed as vermin in those days like the grey squirel today. I prefer a 2.2 for squirel

Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,

You need to visit the lower Taff, through the winter, lots of Grayling and some very big ones. Day tickets available - But you'll get a winter ticket for £15, Tie some Copper Johns, PT, gold heads, GRHE, gold head, pink Bugs, and brown bugs, all in various sizes fro 8' to 18' also you'll need lots of dry flies, Grayling on the dry fly, is brilliant fun!

Sorry I missed catching up last week, I was helping my Daughter to move home from Hertfordshire down to Barnes.

Will catch up soon.

M

for greyling I carry two boxes. the first is a mix of various sizes and colors of czech style nymphs. I've got them sized from 8-18 (8/10's mostly for weights) in all shades of green, brown, tan, pink, purple, and others. There are probably 150 flies in that tiny box. The other box is my standard nymph box which has a general assortment of trout nymphs in all shapes and sizes. I'll normally fish a shrimp like czech nymph (pink/black/silver combinations always start the day) and a #16-ish dark mayfly nymph.

Thanks,
Rick

Cant beat the red tag that James is on about, it is about the worlds most versatile fly you can get.

I have had good success with cased caddis patterns

size 12/14
"caddis" - chartreuse chenille scorched to create a head, legs made of olive partridge
Case - any bit of dubbing you have lying around (I often just bundle all the loose **** from my fly tying bench into a lump and use this) the rougher the better, rib with mono and then clip down to shape.

Weight comes from wrapping lead under the case.

Very good fly fished down and across.

well, I've not tried this for our Arctic Grayling, but have no doubts that it will not work, for I've taken a fair share of it's cousin..the Rocky Mountain Whitefish...
