Default Vice advice

You see what I did there

I've recently come back to fly fishing after around 20 years away.( not at hmp I hasten to add) Anyway back to the thread i bought a few items and have started tying my own flies again the problem is the vice I bought isn't cutting it.
The jaws are to blunt( not pointed enough) for the 18s and 16s hooks I'm using and I'm after your views on a decent vice. I could read the manufactures blurb all day but I'd rather ask the lads who use them all the time. I've around £40 to £50 to spend on one. I've got my eye on the Snowbee Fly-Mate Clamp Vice but I'm still open to other suggestions.

Cheers lads

you could get the midge adapter for your old vice but perhaps you need to treat yourself. regents a cracker for the money.

Hi. I've been tying for a few years now and can recommend the spring loaded 'acclaim' from Caimore. It is £12. I have tried many a budget vice (£10-£50) but this cuts the mustard. I love how easy it is to mount the hook (as small as you like) and I have never had one slip. I do use a Snowbee Waldron as my main tool but the acclaim does the job just as well if you don't require full rotation. I have tied 100s of flies on it and it shows no signs of wear. If it did I would buy another one anyway.
Get it with a pedestal if you can. I take it everywhere! I have just tied 30 size 20 Griffiths gnats on it in just over 1 hour while up the pub! In fact, when I get back on the Waldron have to re adjust my techniques!
The Fly mate looks good value but I have never used one so can't comment.
Otherwise you will need to pay £100 to get something marginally better. The HMS is perfect. Also the Apex models are worth considering.

I have to agree with commo. I went into Orvis and looked at the Regal Vice.

Link : Fly Tying Vise / Regal Vise -- Orvis UK

Then went onto fleebay and bought this Caimore vice £12.99

A big difference in price but they will both hold a hook for you to tie a fly. If you are a tackle tart you will want the Orvis one

just looked at the Orvis vice.

Was a bit shocked to say the least. £120! You would expect a bit of originality at that price rather than a black version of the old Regent. At least the Caimore is honestly priced. Try dividing the Orvis price by 10

"The Regent" is the trade name of a model of vice which comes from a Company of the same name, it is probably the most copied vice on the market today. A bit like all the people who call certain types of tinsel "Flashabou", which is a registered trade name from the first company to market that product, Hedron.
