Default Mad Ronnie

One of my Stepmum's horses (Ronnie) was having his tail cut and he has the finest horse hair I have seen. It was begging to be turned into flies and this is the first tie from it, I am sure there will be more to come.

Click the image to open in full size.

Hook, 103bl size 19
Bead, black tungsten 1.5mm
Tail, black hen
Abdomen, Nags hair
Thorax, Hares Ear

Comments and suggestions on new patterns to try with the horse tail would be greatly appreciated, working on a Klink at the moment which is starting to look alright.

Dan

Normally horse hair is a bigger as it snaps when i try to tie with it but Ronnie's hair is unusually fine and supple so works a treat. I like the segmented effect it gives.

i have different experiance .....horse hair want snap easily ...you forget that olders used it for making fishing lines
Catch was to pull hairs, not cut...and that way you get strongest hair

Haha if I tried to pull his hair i think I would end up with a horse shoe to the chin, he is a bit of a loonie horse, absolutely beautiful but mad as a box of frogs.

I have found in the past that although it has amazing strength when pulled it does not like being bent around small hooks in tight coils such as those needed to wrap a body. Soaking in hot water seems to help this a bit.

The footballer buzzer uses black and white horse hair to create a very nice segmented body.

box of frogs that is good one
soaking horse hair or every kind of quill is old trick in the book
you dont need hot water, most of us(old tiers) use saliva to do that

I started this thread simply to show a fly tied with a material which I have never used before and some mad Montenegran with a taste for horse poo comes along and turns it into some comedy sketch hehe

Will have to have some hair of George the grey as well then and try the segmented banded look!!! Sounds tasty.
