Default fresh water hooks in the salt.

I've just ordered some stuff to start tying swff flies including some hooks in the 4 - 2/0 range but I already have plenty of freshwater lure hooks (sizes 6 & 8). I know these will corrode in the sea but if I give them a rinse after use will they last for a while?

Hi Steve i would not tie on hooks that are not stainless as they will rust under the dressing, so you will be wasting your time and material.
Cheers Ray.

That's what i was thinking Ray - but then if you're casting clousers around rocky places the hook point blunts pretty quickle anyway so if you could get away with 3-4 trips, washing after each it would be worth it.

Good grief! People spend a fortune on rods, reels and lines and then start to worry about a hook rusting after a couple of trips (catch enough fish and the fly is shagged after one trip anyway). If it's sharp enough and strong enough, use them. Even stainless hooks corrode and 9/10 aren't as sharp as their non-stainless counterpart.

I find the zerust system intergrated into flambeau boxes works well. Don't need a flambeau box though. You can get away with just using the blue dividers available on ebay and integrate these into your own box or just set one or two into the box after you are finished fishing. Just search zerust and goto the fishing section. Releases a gas that slows down corrosion.

I also use the little tag ends in the hook storage boxes in my tying area and store unused dividers in the hook drawer.
