Question Ordering materials online

Hi folks

What do you think is the best website to order fly tying materials from.

Could we rate the websites on 3 things out of ten.

Quality of materials

Price of materials

And delivery speed

Thanks in advance

I buy my stuff from Spiders Plus or The Flytying Boutique. I have found the quality of materials first class as is the service in general. If in stock my orders arrive next day. If I need materials not listed simply ask and Phil can usually source them quickly. Add to that sound unbiased advice freely given...I have no need to hunt around.

For me FTB and SP are the real deal, I think many on here would agree.

There is no best website, it depends on what you want, but those quoted above are highly recommended for quality and service. Also Lathkill, Lakeland, (when they have the stuff in stock, but good when they have it), Flytek, Celtic fly, Artifly for the bling! Have dealt with all the above and recomend all!

I don't like the idea of rating, as they all have their particular niches with a few cross overs.

In my experience, all the companys mentioned so far in the thread do their utmost to ensure quality, personal service and delivery. Any ratings therefore would be based on individual preference regarding materials.
For instance, as it seems that many of the posts on here seem to be loch/lough based, there may be a bias towards suppliers of materials for those patterns.

Please, lets not have a ratings regime!

yorkshire game angling have proved to be quite good for me for dubbing etc. they seem to stock a lot of Lureflash products. Not great for saddles though. Free delivery as well.

Phil at FTB is very helpful. Can't wait untill pay day so I can get some saddles from him, will probably be testing spiderplus at the same time

Have to disagree, when ordering there always seems to be something missing or wrong in the packet I recieve through the post. It's almost all Lureflash stuff - eg very poor quality feathers. I have a right mind to send some of the feathers back!

As for saddles - you're definatly correct there, I bought a died black hen - it was tiny! What really annoyed me was when I went to pull off the first feather - the saddle disintegrated! It split into 5 tiny bits as the skin was so thin & brittle - almost like a potato crisp!

Free & fast delivery - that's about all there is going for the place!

I agree with mancfly different sites provide different materials so there cant really be a best , but i have to say Phil at the Boutique is as near as damn it for my needs. Top class materials and service and all round nice guy who cares about the standard of product he sends to his costumers (which cant be said for other bigger warehouse suppliers), with Phil you get exactly what it says on the tin. My vote 11 out of 10. I would also recommend irishflytying they carry some very usleful bits and bobs and very good service, prices aint bad either.

Of the one's I've used:

Cookshill - great - but gotta give him a phone though as his website is just a "here's what I've usually got" kind of thing. Good for fur and feathers, but doesn't do other stuff.

Lakeland - pretty good when they've got stuff in stock. Made a mistake with one order and fixed it sharpish.

Glasgow Angling Centre - advantage of massive selection, and website saying what's in stock, so I use them for things I can't find elsewhere. But they make mistakes in about three quarters of the orders I've placed! Fixed, yes, but still a hassle. Also, delivery is an issue since they use some private firm and if I'm out when they deliver, the nearest sorting office for collection is miles away. At least with Royal Mail, RD, there's a local post office I can nip into to collect.

Sportfish - used several times. No particular memories so they must have been perfectly efficient first time round!

Fly Only - used once for a product I couldnt find elsewhere - were very helpful and prompt. They do Chevron capes.

Ian Woods - used once, again for product I couldn't find elsewhere and ordered some other bits n bobs too. He called me back within about an hour to say he was out of stock with one item but would I like this similar alternative. Pretty good service, I'd say.

Agreed that you can't get everything you want from one place, and my preference is still to go to my local shop and see what they've got, and handle the goods, before resorting to the net.
