Default Best Deer fur for dying?

Hi all,
What type of deer fur is best for dying, tanned or air dried? I dyed up a piece of air dried white deer belly and it came out looking fine. I left it out for a week to dry then bagged it. I pulled it out today to use and I noticed the hide was soft and greasy, the fur was falling off the hide and it stunk.
I did not let the water go over 160 degrees. Did I do something wrong, was it the deer or should I have left it out to dry more?
Any help would be appreciated.

you didnt dry it properly mate.. should of got your ladys hair dryer on it
thats what i do dont put it too close or it will make it brittle and use the side to side motion that the girls do on there hair. first thing i do once iv rinsed the dye off, i take it out back and shake as much out of it as you can
blow dry then leave to dry in the sun behind a net curtain skin side up
make sure you keep airing it out seperating the hairs for the air to get through
if still not dry by the next day repeat the process.. works for me

Her hair dryer is at her house where it belongs! I guess I need to get me one then, guessing the heat gun I have for stripping paint is way too hot.
I guess I should have left it out of the zip lock bag for a few weeks until it was rock hard again and then some (if I use raw hide).
Oh well it was only $2 so a good lesson learned for cheap. Do you use raw or tanned hide, or do you think it matters?
How is your pup getting on? Thanks Em.

always raw mate, the tanned stuff makes the hair stink rotten!
she must be doing alright she went for round 2!
i opened the back door.. she caught wiff ov a cat, shot out the door and up the fence!
luckily i was quick enough to grab her before she fell down and broke the other one i nearly died!! my heart was in my throat mate..
i asked the vet at her check up if she can walk yet?
they said shes doing well but not for atleast another 2 weeks..
thanks for asking mate good luck with the hair..
and dont give me that.. i know youv got a little pink one with a fluffy handle.
your secrets safe with me

The Dark Claret came out nice, proper drying and no zip lock this time.
The Fiery Brown is not impressive.
Same exact recipe as the claret but the Fiery Brown dye was exhausted almost immediately, I even doubled the amount of dye at that point. Oh well.. I will keep at it.
