Default Trout and their colour perception

Hi All, I'm trying to hunt down an article which was featured in a Trout Fishing magazine. I can't remember the name of the Mag or the article. It did however mention how trout see colour, and the shades of colour seen by them.

This is to do with tying coloured triggers into fly patterns, that attract trout and can induce them to take.

If anyone has any information on this, I'd be greatful.

Regards

i wouldnt go to much into that mate.. you'll open up a whole bag of hurt
theres so much information about it it will drive you nuts! the best thing to do is trial and error in your fishing and see for yourself
but i will tell you this... the last colour to fade to most fish as the light fades is purple.. what shade i couldnt tell you.. see what i mean

Default What about shades of Black and of course red

For instance, there are numerous shades of black, so it's not black as we know it (Captain!! Sorry couldn't resist it). Also the distance trout can see the colour red at is supposedly around 9 metres. Is this correct? Anyone?

This really is a can of worms mate. The colour spectrum is not too much different from our own (I think the red is possibly a slightly higher wavelength peak). From what i gather the major point is about light penetration in different water types i.e. peat or clear.

LOL and i allways thoguht they could see yello/green best hence the catch rate of yellow dancers cats whiskers, black n green buzzers, and ive been told in colored water to use green or orange buzzers yet some folk say black is best in colored waters, when its crytal clear i like black or natural fur n feathers with a dash of color for a target, then the trout go and disobey by taking something totally different lol the joys of fishing

Something to read while you are looking

Colour Vision in Trout

How Fish See and use UV rays to find bait fish

Phytoplankton Lab: Hydrologic Optics Primer

There was another theory that they don't see colour as we do but that they see contrasting shades that give a banded effect which they target like the Bibio with its' black red black banding or any fly with two different colours in the body tying or a contrasting hackle.
