Default Help With Dubbing With Antron

Hello everyone, I have no problem dubbing with furs like seals & hare, but I'm struggling to dub with antron.

What I'm doing currently is cutting small lengths of lureflash antron body-wool and rubbing them into a ball then offering it up to the thread. It falls apart very easily.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, however I'm well aware I'm not doing it correctly - can someone please put me out of my misery?

Thanks

I think the antron you are trying to dub may be to thick you should possibly buy a bag of antron dubbing premade and try that and see if it helps.

Thanks for the generous offer emerger, but I've already received fly tying materials from a forum member this week. I don't want to become known as someone who is always recieving something but never reciprocating. I hope you don't take offence to this, but I really couldn't accept anything else.

Really this forum is too nice

I was hoping to only use this antron body wool as a floss, wool and dubbing substitute. It says on the packet "can be teased out and used as Antron seal's fur substitute". Does this mean tying a body like floss, then taking a dubbing needle and teasing out fibers to make it look more shaggy - surely not?

Roll cast, I think you're right, the antron strands do not seem fine enough to be used as dubbing in the traditional way. I hope someone can enlighten me, as I've bought quite a few of the bodywool packets!

I recently tried an emerger pattern that has cream anron dubbing abdomen, all i had was the lureflash corded stuff - i percevered and the body was a shaggy mess - mind u the pattern has accounted for at least 50 trout.

did the job but i reckon ill be buying some actual dubbing

Aha! With a little change to your suggestion I eventually got a decent result.

I cut off a strip of around 3", rubbed it into a ball, then pulled it out and rubbed it until I had a string of some messy antron. I then tied one end in like floss - then wrapped it. After trimming the rediculously large lengths of fibers - it actually looks pretty good - and it's easier than dubbing any kind of fur (I've tried anyway)!
