Default Whats organza ?

Just read the Total Flyfisher and really like the look of steve thorntons patterns but what the heck is organza as I can't find it only get references on google to silk weaves of something.

Also what width of nymph stretch would be best for a size 12 hook to make the hollow body?

Thanks
AL

Roll Cast hi

Organza is a man made material that traditionally has been used in the manufacture of Ladies hats amongst other things.

It should be available from shops such as Hobbycraft etc.

As a fly tying material it is generally used for winging, it makes great sedge 'roof wings'.

cheers

Dave

Hi Al.

If you'd like to p.m. me I'll give you my address so you can send me an s.a.e. & I'll send you some.

I was the first person in the country to use it back in the early 80's when I saw an article by John Betts in the U.S. Mag Flyfisherman.

What a lovely thing to make wings with.. Does it not get a bit floppy though when wet?

Good for wings. It can also cut length ways an used as a rib too. When wound it gives an almost 'herl-like' appearance.

As said, you can buy it by the meter or on rolls from Hobbycraft in a huge range of colours.
I bought a stack of it last year and have only used it as a ribbing material so far. You will need to cut off one of the edges and unpick the cross fibres to use it as a rib.
Will need to try it as a sedge wing.

Organza comes in many forms. ST uses organza ribbon, trimmed.

Dave, Bold & true.

The offer's open to anyone reading this thread by the way.

The best way to make wings from it is to use a wing burner so that all the edges are welded together. Once the material is in the jaws of the burner cut around it around 3mm from the edges of the took so that you'll get an even amount of weld all way round the wing.

If you want a bit more rigidity from the wings, you can always give them a drop of varnish or flexible adhesive that's spread evenly into the wing with your finger tips prior to tying in.
