Default Best whip finishing tool...

without needing a loan to buy it!

I have a thompson style one and have just learned to use it but I don't like having to cover the eye of the hook when whipping plus it is a little awkward espeacially if it comes of the spring. I got it in a mutli-set but time for something better methinks. I had been finger whipping but find that any little cut or snag and I damage the thread or pull open a cut (razor blades can be vicious!).

I'm look for an easy to use one that can also be used to whip small flies.

Matarelli is pretty flawless and easy to use!
Nice video clip below to demonstrate how it works!

Default Go simple.

Have a couple of these tools, but chucked them. I just use my fingers; fast, easy and job done.

Here is a short still picture tutorial on using a simple whip finish tool. If you look closely you will notice the tool has beem modified by putting a taper on the round bend hook to allow the thread to slide off easier. Hope it helps.

I've had a Veniard one for the past 8 years, easy to use, relaible and does the job, also use a half hitch tool (handle of a dubbing needle) on smaller flies, when there's not so much room to finish.

In my humble opinion, the Ken Newton one, as its very quick and easy. Just fell of my seat when I saw the price though

That's the one I'd go for! Mine had a thread cutter on the other. I've got a Petitjean one which is pretty rubbish by comparison, much harder to use.

Regards

Andy
