Spider is on a distinguished road
Default Ghost thread

Reading Jeremy Lucas recent artricles , he refers to Ghost thread ( by Fly tek ) .

Is this the same as stuff like spiderweb - ie a really thin white thread ?

Thanks

It's a monofilament, nylon thread by Bennechi.

PM replied to Mark.

Being a mono thread I dont find much use for it. I used it a while back, but there are better choices IMO

Uni thread do a 17/0 thread. It's very similar to spider web and surprisingly strong. Even with my clumsy technique it's very forgiving. Great for klink posts.

I bought a few spools of ghost thread a while back to try it out - found it rather "gritty" if that makes sense - no where near as smooth as spiderweb.

As bob says, the Uni micro thread - "Trico" is a lot more forgiving that spider web and will take a permanent marker if you don't like the white colour.

Kind regards

I found something very similar with a nylon thread I have tried. It seems to be inconsitency in diameter or something. Almost like little tiny balls in the thread that aren't really visable but can be felt espeacially via the bobbin. I use a cheap bobbin with my nylon so I don't ruin my better ceramic ones.

Been using Ghost thread tonight, first time use of it. Had no probs with it at all. Being fine and mono it takes quite a few wraps to run it down the hook shank though, but that's quickly done all the same. It takes quite a bit of force to snap it, so anchoring turns can be very tight. Probably a good thing to wrap tight, particularly with hackles, due to the smooth slippy surface of the thread. Being fine you can use plenty of turns too. I found it great for wrapping off and whip finishing round the base of a Klink hackle. Also, no varnish is required:-)

Its good for ribbing dubbed bodies on dry flies, especially Superfine ones. As Jeremy Lucas says, it dissapears into the body and helps strengthen it without the need for wire.
Yes i use Spiderweb and Benecchi 12/0 threads too, and i like them. Just thought i would try the Ghost. So far so good.

Thanks Mancfly, so do you think its better than the others you list ?
I have not tried it myself , for wee stuff i normally use Uni 17/0 and wonder if there are any benifits in changing.

Hi Buzz, The benefits over other fine threads are: that it is thin and invisible when used as ribbing to strengthen the body material......so you can wrap a lot of turns over the body to add strength without it looking a mess; it also does not require varnishing at the finish. This factor is important if you whip finish under the hackle rather than at the head on a parachute pattern.

The only disadvantage i can see is that may be cos it is mono nylon it has a slippery surface, so more and tighter turns may sometimes be needed.

IMHO the other fine, strong threads are great and no probs with them, i do shy away from stuff like Mr Mosers that reputedly can cut through anything
The main advantage to me is not having to fiddle with varnishing the whip finish at the base of the hackle turns on a parachute. If i was tying a fly other than para, i would happily use any of the great fine dia threads available.
