Never seen one but I thought they were a kind of stalking bug.

Quick google of firebird stalking bug found the above fly. Looks pretty takeable in my opinion so am guessing this is what the poster meant on the Avington thread.

So as far as i can tell it seems to be a varied pattern where the predominant features are a lot of sparkle, especially in the tail, a whopping great coloured bead and some kind of a dubbed body?

Hi danielp doesnt seem to be a straight forward pattern, you say dubbed but the link ones have flat tinsel on them.
Would be nice to hear off the avington poster who uses them.

The silver Firebird has a dubbed body while the golden has a tinsel body. 2 very different fly bodys. I like the look of them.

Golden Firebird: http://www.fish4flies.com/Nymphs/Sta...olden_Firebird

Hook : 8 - 10
Thread : Black
Body : Flat gold tinsel
Wing : Dozen strand of gold flashabou
Head : Lead Shot size to suit, painted fluo red

Silver Firebird: http://www.fish4flies.com/Nymphs/Sta...ilver_Firebird
Hook : 8 - 10
Thread : Black
Tail : Dozen strands of holographic silver flashabou
Body : Black seal's fur or similar
Head : Lead Shot size to suit, painted fluo red

I love when websites selling flies tell you all you need to try and tie your own.

haha well I managed to tie my own take on them this evening, after reading about their success on the Avington thread i could not resist even though i only get to fish there once or twice a year.

Click the image to open in full size.

Didnt have any silver or gold tinsel handy so used some olive flash instead, think it should achieve the same effect, blind the poor big buggers.
