Default Aero dry wing

Afternoon all
I heard alot of good about Aero dry wing and bought a few packs in various colours but cant get it to float!
Does anyone else use it and have the same problem!
How much should i be using on say a B400 size 12 hopper?
How many strands is the normal and how much is to much?
Do you need gink on it or should it float fine without it?
Any help much appreciated,
Cheers
Baz

Baz,

I tie all my klinkhamers and parachute patterns exclusively with aero Dry Wing and they float like corks!

You do not need to use masses of Dry Wing per pattern - it comes as "4 ply" so for a size 12 hook, I take a two plies - just a card width, fold them in half and fix it to the top of the hook shank in the middle of the yarn, then fold each end up so the wing post ends up as 8 ply. (Does that make sense to you?)

It will float fine to start with without applying any floatant but if you want, apply a small amount to have the pattern float even higher.

Kind regards

Hi Phil,
That makes perfect sense for flies with posts such as klinks, as for flies with a wing like an f fly thats what i cant get right!
Thanks for the advice gents

Baz,

Tie in the aero dry wing as you would a parachute fly wing post, set it vertical then pull it towards the rear of the hook and bind it down at the tie in point with a couple of thread wraps - job done!

Kind regards

I use Aero Dry Wing on Klinks as well but I would suggest that the hackle has more to do with keeping the fly floating. I tried ADW on a few shuttlecock patterns and I was thoroughly disappointed because they sunk like stones. It certainly is not as good as it says on the tin.

I find Niche products siliconised poly yarn just as good and a lot cheaper. Only problem is they don't do as wide a range of colours.

I use a product called Puglisi, and get it from Phil, spiderplus in decent hanks.
I find it makes excellent posts and floats very well.
Different colours as well.

Might try that Puglisi stuff. Presume its Italian, like most of the best things in life - they even make great bamboo rods there !

Doesnt Ollie edwards use normal yarn as per hans van klinken in his dvd ?

I havent been wildly impressed by aero wing either on my own ties, but may not have used enough of it , or else my hackles were too narrow and taken from the tips rather than the base or half way down the stem of the feather.

Phil, have you an opinion on the hackle v the Yarn argument in terms of what governs floatability most....would have thought the hackle span and stiffness ?

mate if it doesnt float it doesnt float! imo aero's not worth the money to me
its no better than the so called poly pro (floating) yarn..... it doesnt float
its just waterproof and for flys that float by the hackle dubbing and gink
iv tied shuttlecocks, F flys and spinners with both and without gink they barely float. if you need to tye an inch of it on a size 12 to float it then its not good for the job, im yet to come across a true floating wing material. with all the materials and companys out there you'd think there would be.
