Default Bank side tying?

I have seen an old fly fisherman tying on the bank and was catching well. Was very interesting to see him whip up something quickly and catch on it while on the go.

Just wondering if anyone here does it and if so what do you use and carry as part of a highly portable but ready to go kit?

That's the best way to match the hatch, but to ambitious for me. I do travel with the basics if I know what I might need and leave my kit in the hotel. I am kinda lazy and if I don't have it I will usually purchase from a local shop, getting what is hot for the moment. Saving the evenings for dinner and a drink.

Can't agree I'm afraid. The best way to match the hatch is to have the flies already tied and in your box... then you can get on with the business of actually fishing, and the hatch doesn't come and go whilst you're faffing around tying on the bank trying to look all romantic and clever. A Blue Winged Olive is a Blue Winged Olive... they don't change by the week.

well.. I didn't really type what I was thinking. I do that frequently....
True the entomology of a location does not change rapidly. No I would not take a vise to the river or lake. Yes I prefer to have boxes full and ready to go. But I have been surprised and not had the "hot" fly of the day or I have lost the go to pattern and could not buy more. On those days I was glad I had my kit (back in the hotel).
