Default What are the best hackle pliers and scissors availible?

Hi, haven't been on for a while away for weekend, have been tying plenty of flies up though and have went through another hackle pleir as it has slackened so much it won't hold a hackle tight enough to wind the hackle tight enough.

So am looking to get myself a pair of good hackle pliers but don't know what style is best along with a new pair of scissors as my pair of stevie munn scissors have given up aswell.

Thanks

Don't know what the best are, tried a few in the last 6 months. At the moment I am happy with Marryat scissors and hackle pliers bought from Phil at the Flytying Boutique on here. The pliers are light and seem to hang on well. I like the ring on the end which helps keep everything in line. The scissors are very sharp and snip close. I'd recommend them both.

Hi,
I have settled on C&F hackle pliers (mental money, like all C&F stuff, but I wouldn't be without them) and Japanese embroidery scissors sold under the Kai brand in craft shops. The scissors cost around a tenner and are far and away the best I have ever used (and that includes the mega-expensive Rubis jobs sold in the Marc Petitjean kits).
Cheers,
Angus

Thanks for the replies so far.
Have seen the anvil scissors and like them but not sure what one would be best or the adjustable scissors by streamworks/

Hello flyinghigh, must admit when choosing my scissors I look in markets the pair I've got now have had them 15yrs and still going they cost me 99p in Leeds market, but I would look in embroidery shops get a feel for them, as for Hackle pliers mine are just the run of the mill wire ones had these 2 pairs for about 20yrs, if yours are not gripping cover the tips with rubber tube look to electricians wee covers on their wires.
I tend to look elsewhere away from the tackle shops which is my choice.

Robbie

Another vote for the Marryat scissors and hackle pliers - really good quality gear IMO.

RUBIS Swiss Tweezers and Scissors at FUZZ OFF®

rubis scissors from these guys are a fantastic deal. Esp when you see the price of them when sold by C&F designs or Marc Petijean ( same scissors).

have a look in Halfords, some have small hobby/craft sections and in there you will find iris scissors for about £8. Incredibly sharp and great at keeping there edge even when abused with power silks.

I have tried a few hackle pliers, tiemco ones are good but the long stonefly does the job for a few quid. The really cheap ones are even ok if you put a bit of rubber over the jaws to make them grippy.

My own preference for scissors are the ones used optical surgery, they are called Iris scissors (not the spring type ones) & are a longer version of the ones one normally sees. 5" is the ideal length for me, as that enables you to get a high degree of accuracy in their placement without your hand getting in the way of your vision. They are easy to carry in your hand right throughout an entire tying session, without constantly picking up/putting down. They come in both straight & curved blades with very fine tips & they cut right to the extremities of their tips. I get them from a specialist supplier, who will sharpen a new pair for me way beyond the makers spec. The stainless versions are able to be sharpened more than the t.c. ones, which are usually made from inserts welded into st.stl. If anyone's interested I can put you in contact with my supplier, who is able at most times to offer both cheap-ish straight versions & the real thing (prices vary from a very few £'s to teens of £'s).

I must have a dozen or more different hackle pliers, the ones I tend to use mostly these days are the ones built into my hands.
