Here is an Aussie trick.
We often use a trailing shuck in our emerging patterns and most of the emergers used in Tassie (where mayfly fishing is at its best in the Antipodes) are tied using natuaral Possum fur.
What we do is pretty simple and as Possum fur is hollow it works well.
1. Take a piece of natural fur off the skin - cut it close to the base. You will note that there is a lot of under fur in the pinch. Hold the fur by the guard hairs and strip it out. Keep this as it is great for Adams bodies.
2. Tie the guard hairs in by the tips to form a tail. You need to make sure that the 'light grey' section commences right at the start of the body.
3. Clip off the tips and complete the fly.
4. Now for the trick. Using your scissors, start trimming the tail into a cone shape. You don't need too much remaining, only enough to represent the shuck.
Possum fur can be easily obtained in the UK and the beauty about this material is that it has a small crinkle to it and is translucent. Don't forget that it will float.
