Default Shuck Material

Hello all i have been using little orange body Deer Hair emergers & finding them very effective .I want to try them with an addition of a little shuck too. Would orange Cdc make a good shuck or would Z-lon or something different be a better option to try. Cheers

I have been trying Antron Body wool/yarn. Tease out the fibres a little. Also Antron Poly yarn, the stuff sometimes use to make wing posts or wings. Again teased out or pickout some of the fibres to make a more translutant effect.

Niche of Chelmsford offer shuck materials. If you wanted a natural material, then Phil White uses fibres of grey mallard flank, these turn very diaphanous in water.

Try Zelon for shucks - works a treat: Flytying Boutique - for unusual and interesting materials

Here is an Aussie trick.
We often use a trailing shuck in our emerging patterns and most of the emergers used in Tassie (where mayfly fishing is at its best in the Antipodes) are tied using natuaral Possum fur.
What we do is pretty simple and as Possum fur is hollow it works well.
1. Take a piece of natural fur off the skin - cut it close to the base. You will note that there is a lot of under fur in the pinch. Hold the fur by the guard hairs and strip it out. Keep this as it is great for Adams bodies.
2. Tie the guard hairs in by the tips to form a tail. You need to make sure that the 'light grey' section commences right at the start of the body.
3. Clip off the tips and complete the fly.
4. Now for the trick. Using your scissors, start trimming the tail into a cone shape. You don't need too much remaining, only enough to represent the shuck.
Possum fur can be easily obtained in the UK and the beauty about this material is that it has a small crinkle to it and is translucent. Don't forget that it will float.
