Default CDC & Elk Fly

Hello all i am looking for a few tips on tying Cdc & Elk flies. When i start off fishing some Cdc & Elk flies i have tied up they often float on there side at first. But after a little while the Cdc becomes waterlogged & they start floating the right way up.Is this normal or am i tying too long a wing or too sparse a wing or would a slightly heavier hook help.Any advice welcome .Cheers

There's an s.b.s. for the sinking version on www.danica.com by Hans Wielenmann (the site owner) who greatly favours this fly & uses it very effectively.

There's also a background to the tying on the floating version, which is about 12% down on the l/h side of his page, cllick on the fly & it will take you there

I believe you cannot download individual SBS's, but have to go to the site yourself.

Yep, but you can go straight in to individual pages. Curious…

CDC&Elk

There's also a video SBS, which makes it look ridiculously easy!

We had stuart crfts doing a workshop and he told us how he 'ginks' his fly which was a revelation to a lot of guys with this problem.

He licks his Forefinger and thumb before he holds the fly and then ginks the top so that the hook and the under side is wetted and it drops in through the surface film. It works a treat.
Maybe you dont gink your elk, but try wetting the hook and the under side with abit of spittal first and see what happens!
