Hi Bob, not sure if this is relevant or not, but I'm sat at work waiting for some paint to dry.Done all the usual things a decorator does in a unnattended house, had a good rifle through the cupboards, tried out the beds for comfort. Tried on all the customers clothes. In fact I'm sat here now in a little black & diamonte number. Very cooling, not sure I've got the hips for it though.

For me the hardest thing (of which there many). Was finishing the fly.
So my tip would be practice half hitches and whip finish before you put a hook in the vice.

I practice by putting a stout needle point first into the vice and then tie on the thread, wrap it round then whip finish, pull off thread then repeat, repeat, repeat(more repeats). Saves on having to cut the thread off hooks.

I'm sure someone will be along in a mo to tell you ideal patterns to try.
But from my experience. Damsels, black buzzers, and pheasant tail nymphs are great for us beginners.

That's my advice from one beginner to another.

Look eye,allways look eye.

Sean

it will if you use a good quality waterproof one like "zap a gap" as a lot turn white after a while, zap a gap also gives you a longer "set time" than normal super glues when bonding things together so your able to set things right rather than have them set straight away on contact !!!

try pheasant tails nymphs ,easy to tie and will catch almost anything !!!!!!!!!!have a look in the SBS section ..

Hi.
Varnish is generally better than superglue because glue has a nasty habit of going cloudy.
The only things I use superglue for are securing hairwings & lead underbodies.
As for what flies you should tie... well since you've bought a kit, it will largely depend on what's in it unless you wish to spend more money straight away!
Finally, it would be helpful to know what waters you fish & exactly what patterns/methods you prefer. There are plenty of simple buzzers & lures you can try, but if you're completely new to fly-tying then learning the basics are essential.

As above ptn is quite easy as are gold rib hares ear. I would recommend you get your hands on either The Fly-Tying Bible by Peter Gathercole or Charlie Cravens Basic Fly Tying. Both will give you a sound base to work from, both are available at Amazon books. Cravens book is on ebay usually for about 18-20 quid. Don't be put off because it's American, lots of the flies are the same as ours and the methods are no different.

I'm newish as well and those books really helped.

Not sure about the super glue, doesn't feel right to me.

For anyone interested in starting fly tying, please check out www.the-fdg.org & see if there's a branch near you. Another site well worth looking at is Gwent Angling Society they have a huge range of top quality videos for all types of fly tying from beginner to advanced.
