Default Edwards Heptagenid

Iv just bought Masterclass and im having trouble kinking the legs on the Hept nymphs. In the book it says to use the tips of a fine pointed tweezers to kink the legs, the tweezers i have only seems to close at the very point when i apply pressure. Now it works to a certain degree and iv caught fish on them but they dont look as good as they should. Can anyone suggest a pair of tweezers that would do the job properly, iv seen bead tweezers that look as if they close flat all along their lenght perhaps these would do. Its frustrating to tie the rest of the nymph as per the book only for poorly kinked legs to ruin the look of the fly.( Before anyone suggests trying rubber legs and a hot point tool iv tried this with good results I just think the guinea fowl looks better.) Cheers.

Oliver modified a pair of tweezers to do this job with, just before "hot point's" came into fly tying.

He filed one internal edge so that it had a v groove in it, running lengthways with needle files & the other side was filed to a blade type edge so that they met on closing. They were them heated in a lighter flame & squeezed onto the nylon causing it to kink.

I reckon if you are getting that close to the imitation you are little better than a bait fisherman !

Disgraceful !!

Best wishes

Have you tried the Veli Autti legs - no need to kink and look excellent IMO

I have tried those veli autti legs and they do look good but i still want to get those guinea fowl legs right. Iv ordered a pair of bead tweezers of the net il see how these work. Suerly somebody else has encountered this problem?

Default heptas

Trouble is they take so much effort that they end up too good to use I find a nice beadhead represents the flat stoneclinger head well enough and some partridge for legs right in behind the head does for the legs. re tweezers ---nurses and medics get the best ones --- sharp at the point for getting foriegn objects out of eyes, try that route.

I totally respect the efforts you are making to further your art bill d.
Fly tying has two sides;

To create a fly that will catch a fish.
To create a fly for its own sake.

There is a lot of cross over in both these points. Sometimes a simple hares ear is the killer fly, other times an exacting a copy as possible is needed.
One of my old school teachers tied exquisite flies and never fished in his life!!!
You take what you want from each.
I enjoy my fly tying almost as much as my fishing and I strive to tie top quality flies. When it comes to the patterns I use thought they are generally scraps of fur and feather such as a stewart style spider or a diawl bach.

Each unto their own.

Have to say I agree with Maharg. Losing an Ollie Edwards nymph up a tree would be quite painful......
