One question.........WHY?

It's not fly tying is it..be honest!

You may as well go and buy some jelly eggs and insert a hook through them and add a turn of silk and call that a fly too, or (and here's a good idea,) why not tie a pellet band to a hook then you can change the colour and flavour of the fly and only need a couple of ready made hooks.

Regards

Lots of people are new to fly fishing and indeed fly tying. Catching stockies feeds the addiction which can only be a plus from my point of view. If its legal where you fish and it works...... Keep going flytire and ignore these pompus remarks.

Best regards

Rob

........... Now I'm off to HobbyCraft cos they're cheaper their!

Roders,

Pompous.......Ha.....

Have you looked where this guy is from?

He fishes in Connecticut USA where they have some really good fly fishing. They probably dont even have stock ponds, as most folks in the states don't buy into the idea and while they do stock some of the rivers you have to ask why is he tying egg patterns? Is it beacause so many people use real fish eggs to decimate the wild fish that they have banned them?

If you want to catch rather than fly fish then by all means use rubbish like the "fly" above but you should not devalue a really good forum with it.

Fly fishing is not bait fishing nor is it all about catching.
Fly tying is also an art and not an exercise in gluing plastic beads on a hook . If he wants to use an egg fly pattern then come on, tie a proper one with yarn, it may not be as quick and simple but at leats some aspects of craft are involved.

If he seriously wants to be a fly tier then hopefully he will soon progress onto real flies.

Regards

Default Egg Flies

I have been using these flies for a few years now and dont see how they are devalueing the forum!
I regard them as a natural food source so why not use them to deceive trout or grayling? I use them for grayling on the tweed as the grayling eat the salmon eggs at the back end.
Personally I don`t see anything wrong with these and think they demand a bit more technique than just simply gluing a bead onto a hook! Yarn is just as simple to use (and less effective) so why bother?
Some people on this forum need to catch a grip!

Darren

Wink To Each his Own !

Gentlemen :..you all are right in your own, however, one must not judge how one 'fly' fishes if their method is not the same as yours..

..in NA, the art of fly tying and fishing is new compared to the old world and the generation gap is also very different..ppl here like myself try and find easier ways of not only tying flies, but catching fish on the flies that are tied.

..in the Eastern part of NA..there are both provinces [Canada] and states [USA] where it is legal to fish with real roe..however, this chap has decided to create an 'artificial'..lure if you must or fly as it is called..so he now can fish with his favorite method..a fly rod, line and his new created 'fly'..Which in his area, it represents the number one food for trout and salmon..........AW

"Fly Fishing" with plastic eggs over there is quite common & there are at least a couple of companies that sell nothing else apart from these things. They even run adverts in U.S. fly-mags. I suppose at least with the "tied" versions you can impregnate them with all sorts of fluids, a bit like many of today's coarse fishers do.

Some years ago I went to a small put & take fishery in S.Wales called Ravensnest, it was very cold there - a couple of days after xmas. About midday when we were in the lodge recovering, a guy cane along & started to fish outside the lodge. He was using an egg type fly & literally it was a fish a chuck, when we hadn't seen anything all morning. Legal, yes as he used barbless hooks on a catch & release lake.
