Not very. Choose a fly, buy some tools and materials and have a go. There are loads of step by steps (SBS) on here that list the materials you need and how to do it. You could buy a 'kit' that will get you started with tools and materials, most people on here however would advise you to buy just what you need and build from there.

Would a Lefty's Deceiver or a Clouser Minnow be an easy one to start with?

Depends on where you live & your commitment. Take a look at The FDG & see if there's a branch near you, if so try & join it as soon as you can. The late Dick Walker once said, " if you can tie your own shoes.... then you're 1/2 way there" or something like that.

It is easy to get started and to tie something that will catch fish . I started in the new year and was surprised that the fish took my flies just fine !!
Can't beat the feeling of catching on your own creations .
What I would say though is do as I did ( if you can ) and have someone show you first hand how to dub , tie in hackles , whip finish etc... Failing that get on Utube as there is heaps on there that will help you .
Pick a pattern you will actually fish with and start from there . If you get to a point that you are not happy with a section of the fly then just back track and sort that bit out then go onto finish the fly .
Just keep at over and over and it will all start to fall into place . If you make sure you correct mistakes as you go you will not keep repeating them and before you know it and with out even noticing your flies will be getting neater .
Heads like footballs will soon be a thing of the past

Good luck and make sure you post on here , even if you think it is bad . It is a very good way to get help and have outside eyes looking on seeing where improvements can be made .....

Big Bass,
Where are you in the US? I know a lot of pepole in a lot of places so can probably put you in touch with a shop/outfitters that does lessons.
Check out Trout Unlimited chapters near you or your local Confederation of Coastal Anglers group. They usually have some fly tying lessons or group activities. Bass Pro shops also run classes in most of their "in store" fly fishing shops.
Another option for later in the year is go to one of the Fly Fishing Show venues, The next is November at Somerset New Jersey and then they travel around the US until March . While not lesson orientated you can take classes with some of the top names and all the tiers will happily spend some time helping you if you have problems in a specific area.

Regards and welcome to the madness!
