hi martin, do you prefer a heavier hackled spider to a sparse one ???, a lot dress them differently no matter what pattern they are copying ....

To be honest it depends where i am and what i am doing...

darn sarf on the chalkstreams i have to fish them more like a dry so i tend to over hackle them, if , however i am making the pilgrimage home to yorkshire then that means fishing on the wharfe.. in which case i would put a turn less on them... i have to say i didnt realiae how "hackle happy" i had got until i photographed these last night...

Probably a stupid question but do you varnish spider patterns as some that I have seen have very glossy bodies almost like a thin layer of varnish

alot of spider patterns are tied with waxed silk or thread,
thats what gives them a shine.

I do my Hairs Lug and Plover a little different.
You can tie these as my mate Roger Fogg does in light and dark versions.
Depending on what your imitating at the moment.
It a cracking fly I much prefer the dark Stewarts style as here.

Very nice tyings there Martin and bbamboo. Pretty sure those ultimate critics, the trout , will find them to their taste
Such a pity more of the members on here don't seem to like your works though, perhaps you should do a blob variant to get some interest going.
