Default genetic cock hackles for size 16

I have genetic cock saddles that do me for sizes 10,12 and 14, but need hackles that will tie sixteens. Fishing reservoirs I don't often need to go down to a sixteen, so don't need many- it would be pointless me buying a cape as I would never use the tiny hackles. Does anyone sell loose genetic hackles (brown or similar) in packs?

the american size 16 is bigger than U.K size 16, roughly the equivalent to U.K size 14

Default US v UK

Where did that size difference come from? There is no difference in UK and US hackle sizes

These are worth a look at. I recently bought a pack of colours that i don't have on capes. OK they are various sizes but all pretty small. In the pack i got there were several hackles that would do size 16 and below, and as they are long you get quite a few flies from one hackle. Also plenty of the slightly longer fibred hackles are good for size 16 parachute/klinks.

Guys,

Get real here, a long fibred size 14 is a 12

You need 1 size bigger for Klinks ie a 12 hzckle on a 14 fly

regards

Emerger,

With respect, I think you are confusing physical sizes of hackles, with tyer’s choice of sizes of hackles !

A size 16 hook is always a size 16 hook, whether you are in the UK or the USA.

The actual choice of hackle for that hook may vary, according to the style of fly you want to tie and YES – many American tyers will choose a hackle that we in the UK may think is larger than we would choose.

So - if you are tying a traditional hackled pattern such as an Adams with a collar hackle, on a size 16 hook, many UK tyers will choose a hackle - call it "A" ... and many US tyers will choose hackle "B" - that has longer barbs than hackle "A".

Kind regards

Golly, I'm getting confused! I never wanted to start such fierce debate! I was just after hackles to tie #16 Bob's Bits with. Two members here have generously offered to send me some, but I shall certainly be looking at getting some loose hackles in colours I don't often use, so thanks for those links.I thought the only way to get genetics was by buying a whole, or half, cape.

Gad,

Half and full capes / saddles do offer great value for money but you will end up with a lifetimes supply of one colour - the packs of saddle hackles are excellent if you are tying just a few sizes of flies.

But if you are tying a variety of sizes - 10 to 26, then a half cape is the way to go.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you need more help...

Kind regards
