Default Hare's ear

I've got a couple of bags of of Hare's ear dubbing. They're a mix of long and short hairs.
Since I don't actually have a Hare's mask, is there any practical way to seperate out the guard hairs, eg to use for GRHE tails?

I tied a few with pheasant tail, but the flies don't quite have the same feel to them.
