Default Some classics and a couple of experiments

Had a good session at the vice today and am getting happier with some of my classics. Here goes..

Peter Ross

Bloody Butcher - thanks for all the advice on dealing with those Mallard Blues folks. Coming together better WITHOUT needing Floo Gloo ^^

Wickham's Fancy - thanks for the pointers last time. I think the wings are starting to look better now

Quill Bodied Black Gnat - Wings are improving - many thanks to Davie McPhail on this one.. brilliant demo of this wing style on his Blue Dunn

and the last two are a couple of experimental Damsel's after I managed to find just the right shade of floss in the store this week.

Hackled..

Excellent. Looking good. I see your wing on the Peter Ross suffers from the same trouble as mine - sticking up a bit more than perhaps is perfect. I often have this trouble and reckon its something to do with the seals fur and hackle behind it pushing it up. My next attempt will involve building up the head a bit below where the wing ties in to see if that works.

Cheers folks, yes the Peter Ross is a tad high.

I think there's a slightly too large step down between the body winding and the head space. An extra run up to the eye and back before tying in the wing might help it but I also see now that some versions use a false hackle so that would also help. What's traditional on this? My book shows a full hackle.

And now I notice that some stray fibres from the end of the wing on the Wickham's are spoiling the effect of the head. Amazing what you see on close up because looking at the fly right now in my hand it's hard to see them

Ah well practice, practice, practice as they say
