Default Send tying materials to OZ

My fishing buddy moved to Oz and he is not coming back anytime soon.
He left me all his tying gear

He is missing his fishing and tying that much he asked me to look in to send his stuff out to him.
I am not sure the fur and feathers would be allowed in the country, anyone have any experience in such dealings?

Cheers

Munro

I have never shipped directly to Australia but to get round US import restrictions I usually mark any fly tying material as "craft materials" and so far haven't had any problems. Check out the Australian Governemnt website, they are bound to have the import restrictions on there somewhere.

Cheers

Munro,
The problem with Australia is the Quarantine rules that are in place. We have a lot of disease free species that most countries don't have. This includes Salmonids. You simply cannot send feathers into the country and it can be difficult at time to send made up flies.
Having dais that, I have taken flies into Australia when I have returned from time to time. You just need to be up front.
Now there are a couple of things he can do.
(1) If he wants materials then there are excellent fly fishing shops in the east of the country that can help. Two to google are the Compleat Angler in Melbourne and Essential Fly Fishing in Launceston. Both have a large range of fly tying kit and materials.
(2) Some of the local tackle shops in Perth may have some saltwater gear as that is what he will be targeting (see my earlier reply)
(3) You can send him some materials. Just do not send anything that you may have obtained in the wild. If they are packaged they will most likely get through. Everything coming into Australia is xrayed so they will be scrutinised. If sealed they will get through.
(4) You can tie flies and send them to him but I would add a letter in the envelope to state that you have tied them with commercially bought materials. If located they will probably be gamma rayed before they get to him.
(5). Now if it is his entire kit, then it will probably be picked up by quarantine and it could be pot luck. The problem is feathers and fur, not anything else. Me, I would just send the gear and he will have to buy feathers and fur. Anyway, he will be tying different flies in Perth.
So it is possible, just complicated.

I remember reading in the front of the Veniard trade cat. some years ago, that virtually anything that was on-skin would be destroyed & this was well before the bird-flu situation.

I don't know how much stuff he has, but probably the likely cost of sending it will be prohibitive, even without a veterinary licence, cites certs etc etc. People do send capes etc over there, Whiting's are a case in point, but they will not do it without full certification to both export to, & probably faxed copies of import certs as well.

It's probably the most difficult country in the world to send wildlife based products to.

Thanks for the advice, i kind of thought that.
Like you i think he would be just as cheap rebuildingup a new kit in Oz.
That is part of the fun.
I will forward your reply's on to him.

Cheers

in Oz the rules are pretty straight forward..on importing feathers/fur into their country, and that's a 'no no'..it is best that your m8 'buy' a fly tying kit there, rather than you sending down his stuff only to get grabbed at the customs office........AW

Typically if they're packaged and obviously treated then they're okay. So for example if you were to send a Whiting cape in a Whiting packet you're fine. (After all, shops import them for sale.) A bunch of feathers in a bag is likely difficult. In any event, don't listen to anyone here and go look on their website.

I don't have the website for Australia but here are the rules for New Zealand and I'd expect things aren't so different across the ditch:

http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/impor...acfoic.all.htm

NZ is much more particular about these things than Australia - after all, they imported convicts!
