Default John Tyzack, you da man.

Just a quick post to say that my last day's fly fishing was probably my best ever and to point out the fly that did it.

As usual my deadly Griffiths Gnat was , well, deadly, but the fly that knocked spots off it was the JT Olive, in sizes 17 and 19 Tiemco 103BL.

My new 5 wt Sage SLT gets better all the time, and so does the Barrio line that flies through its rings. Thanks to all concerned for pointing me towards these items.

The 3.5ft furled leader is also proving a revelation, and all the above products were found through being educated on this site.

But the JT Olive was a true revelation.

I only tie flies in the close season, to make up for the misery of it, but i may have to break that self imposed rule this time.

Hats off to the boy Tyzack, and i also look forward to tying that one plume CDC ( Jeremy Lucas ) which is modelled on the JT Olive apparently.....

A basic CDC pattern.... only the JT precedes it.... I have boxes full of MI patterns... why?... cos I tied em!! pathetic!! Varients of other patterns... nothing else!!

Martin is quite correct - the JT olive is just a standard CDC dun pattern, variants of which have been lurking around in most river fishers' fly boxes for years and years now (I unwittingly tied a near identical fly to imitate pale wateries about 5 years before I became aware of the JT olive).
John T has taken a template, adapted it to suit his needs and given it a name - no harm in that I'm sure you'll agree......but all this talk of which pattern preceded which is nonsense - it doesn't take a genius at the vice to start meddling with a CDC wing and come up with something as near as damn it just the same.
The basic premise is, as Spider rightly points out, deadly for river trout; and JT's take on this (ie using the mole's fur instead of olive dubbing) is particularly effective on LDOs I've found.

Precisely!... Its the same with stillwater patterns... For instance, a pattern which did so well many years ago called the Captain Scarlet was tied exactly the same as the now 'Prolific' BLOB....... The guy who first tied the CS makes no claim to 'inventing' the Blob..... Now who was it?. his name escapes me??

Well done Spider, you have crossed a very important bridge and will not need look back.

5 seasons ago my river boxes were stuffed with various hackled dries, paraduns, parachutes etc for the olives ... and an occasional fish grabbed hold.

In it now are 5 grffiths gnats , a dozen or so klinks and thats it as far flies with any hackle are concerned. All the rest of the dries are either variations on what u call the JT olive, variations on the cul de canon and Spent/Spinner patterns. All tied with CDC except a few of the jt types as spinners with deer hare for faster water. Everthing becomes an awful lot simpler and less confusing when making your fly choice.

Given the vast amount of stuff one reads concening duns and high riding hackled flies when I moved to these simple styles initially I still had quite a few high riders just in case - I am glad to say that, "that just in case situation" never happened. Flies tied in the style of the JT olive are to the trout a more easy target than high riding Duns - and that is why they work so well. Trout , wild trout in particular will also eject them less quickly.

Keep em slim , and keep em simple.
