There, I have said it!

I would have to agree with that statement. And to give it credence, I can offer some experience with two river patterns.
The first is a simple black shuttlecock style, simply black thread body and a tuft oft CDC pointing back over the eye. This fly performs I reckon about 25% better tied on a black hook - and probably for obvious reasons.
The second fly is a greenwells variant dry. Originally tied on bronzed hooks I found it an excellent fly. Last season I fell in love with black tiemco 206bl's and a similiar gunmetal colour Grip hook - these hooks killed this pattern stone dead and I mean stone dead.
I am now going through another fall in love with a hook phase, 90% of my flys for rivers have for the past few months been tied of kamasan 980's or the same/similar drennan carbon specimen. These are straight eyed , offset barb - simply strong efficient hooks and the only hook I have come accross that I would put on par with the kamasan B160's.
There can be no doubt that hook colour can enhance or kill some pattern's from a fish's perspective. From my own personal experience I would not tie another pattern on a black hook unless the body on the pattern itself is black.
Gold may enhance some patterns and may kill others. My only advice would be thread carefully if you choose to move beyond normal bronzed hooks - and don't base your choice and what u think looks good

- test a few before rushing out to buy a few hundred hooks.
