Hey there!

I would:
1) set a budget and determine if you can afford to buy individual tools rather than buying a kit...if you can afford to buy individual tools, definitely do so...otherwise, go with a kit;
2) make a list of flies you would like to tie and the materials needed (definitely start with simple patterns);
3) buy the materials needed for those flies;
4) find some fly tying books at your local library;
5) check out the videos by Davie McPhail on YOUTUBE.

Hope this helps.

Btw, I would recommend starting with lures, pheasant tail nymphs, buzzers, and gold-ribbed hare's ears

Agree with what's been said so far.
Your most important (& probably most expensive single item) purchase will be your vice.
Avoid the cheapies, because after some tying, you'll find out why they're cheap.
Welcome to the club, because once you've started catching on your own flies, you'll be well & truly hooked.
Good luck.

tried tying a few flys and dont have the patience but if you can do it and you enjoy it then it must be great being able to tie what you want because shop flys are a hit or miss for quality and choice and the sizes can be limited

Gary
I started tying this year and before I bought anything I posted a list of the flies I wanted to tie (the ones I use most) here on the forum. People then suggested the tools and materials t buy and I quickly had a list of things to get me started.

I have to disagree about the comment on cheap vices.
I have a regent rotary, under £30.

I tie down to size 24 and up to size 2 for SWFF.
My first one lasted about 15 years and I tie most days.
