Smile Diawl Bach - A better fly??

Hi All, Iv'e been tying these babies in a very different way for a couple of months now. Mr Unwin from Fulling Mill says, damage from Trout teeth is negligable. I say Mr Unwin, you are wrong. You come to Ellerdine with me and see the results of trout teeth on my flies.

Anyway, most people tie their holographic around the body, why not tie it in using the wire rib, but tie it in horizontally along the body? It makes the flt more resilient to trout teeth and looks fantastic. Add to this a trigger, such as Antron body wool, to the head in a short tuft and you have it.

That's what I have done it works very well, also tie them on buzzer hooks for a different profile too.

Best regards

Interesting, mine have been pretty robust and pretty effective too. I have been getting mostly pretty aggressive takes and the hook stuck in the bonier part of the upper jaw rather than the scissor though. Perhaps it's just the way that I'm fishing them and what the Trout think they are and maybe it isn't typical. I've been fishing them just sub surface on still water with a tiny twitch retrieve and they probably look more like a buzzer to the Trout.

I also like to use a no 10 buzzer hook from time to time for them with silver wire rib and a heavily lacquered head and these seem to go down a treat too.

All Fulling Mill flies are tied with a layer of varnish on the shank. With the addition of a rib this makes a huge difference in durability. I do not add varnish to all my flies but certaily anything with a peacock herl body gets the treatment.
Tied in this way my flies last for several fish but brownies do have a way of stripping off most flies with their sharper teeth.

I also like to wire rib over any holoflash to protect the holo rather than the body. I use the very fine Lagartun coloured wire.

Regards

Hi All, Iv'e moved some images onto photobox but can't drop them in. Any help would be great. Including a tying sequence for something else.

When you put your mouse pointer over the image and it brings up a box. Copy and paste the bottom one onto here.

Actually, I'm assuming that you are using the traditional approach and winding the rib in the opposite direction to the herl? That stops a lot of unwinding of course.
