Default Shorter stiffer hackles

Hi
I'm looking for a black cape for tying small black spiders, klinkhammers(hackles of no more than 10mm) and for daddies etc.
I'm quite new to fly tying and have been using the cape I've got (I think its indian or jungle cock cape from ebay!)at the moment but the barb length is always too long and when wet, fold up to nothing. I would like is a shorter hackled stiffer cape that will do what I want ?
I have a budget of about £10 is this asking too much?
Thanks
Richard

Afraid so!

You'd need to expect to pay in excess of £25 for a quality genetic cock cape. However, Klinks, because they don't rest on hackle points don't require the very best quality.

Also, 'floatability' isn't just about hackle ... hook choice, appropriate body material etc are all key contributors.

Is it the length of the hackle then that makes them fold up too much when wet then? My home made spiders just end up as a wet blob whenI use them Bought ones don't seem to do this.
I do need shorter barbed hackles than I have at the moment though
Is there anyone who sells genetically modified part capes or just loose hackles that would be suitable?

FeatherBenders, Hackles for Fly Tying have several stockists & do offer various options. Contact Steve Cooper tell him what you want & he will point you in the right direction if he can't help you ( www.cookshillflytying.co.uk) best to call him though. Buy a cheapo Indian hen cape & a pkt of Whiting 100's (Celtic flycraft)

depends on if hes fishing dry or wet spiders, the majority are soft hackled wets.

The Dry 8 Ball (my name for it)

size 12-18 b170 or your choice of light wire hook
black or dark red thread 8/0 fire orange can have its day
rib tag end of thread (to hold the hearl down) wrap in opposite direction
body peacock hearl,if you dont have hearl a dry dubbing is fine (no rib)
legs black cock hackle, tye off

if you notice tiny little spiders at the edge or around trees and plants
a griffiths gnat in size 16-22 can come into play, pretty much the same again

b170 or your choice(light wire) you could try a 14 otherwise 16-22
black 8/0 thread
rib tag end of the thread
body peacock hearl, thread, or a very fine dubbed body (super fine dubbing)
hackle grizzly or cree
palmer the hackle on the body, tye down with the thread rib then tye off

its worth paying out for a dry saddle or a cape the packet hackles are rubbish unless you get the whiting ones which cost the best part of a saddle or cape anyway...

Are those Whiting 100s packets still around. Would be ideal for what he wants & within the price range.
