Default best wax

I am disappointed with the standad tier's bees' wax as it is simply not "tacky" enough for dubbing seals fur etc. Cobbler's wax is fine for black flies but stains lighter threads. Need advice please on other suitable products.

The "classic flies" thread is great and I've found it extremely helpful in my tying activities. Many thanks to the contributers for their excellent work.

Jaykay.

The slightly tackier unofficial sustitute for tying wax is good old prit-stick!
When you get to the dubbing stage just pull the bobbin down the required amount then run the prit stick downward on your side of the thread in one even stroke and then same again on the far side, so nearly all the thread is covered.
Make sure you don't use too much, as this is as problematic as using far too little. The rule of thumb is if you can see the stuff on the thread, you've probably overdone it.
Now dub in the usual way & your problem should be solved.

For but the massive sum of £1.69 you can have a lump of what I use for commercial thread waxing which contains only 6 components including tallow which I get from religious institutions ! Aye - partially blessed wax !

Pm me if interested .

Best wishes

Or simply persevere and learn to dub a fly properly without wax.

Are you using an un-waxed thread jakie....? Midlander is correct, you should be able to dub seal fur without any additional wax if you are using a pre-waxed tying thread.I use Uni pre waxed....wax is now redundant

What seal fur is it are you sure it isn't really stiff low quality adults seals instead of baby seals fur. You should have no problem dubbing a good soft seals fur

Click the image to open in full size....it seems that you either use or not use wax to dub seal fur, but I to was having a bit of a problem until I watch a video about a very old English tyer who mention and displayed his method of applying dubbing...all he did was wet his fingers with his spit, applied it to the thread , then dubbed the seal fur..it worked for me! He did this to whatever dubbing he was using for whatever fly he was tying.
