Default Dry olives

Well it's that time of year where we begin to wave goodbye to the trusty large dark olive hatches of spring....and look forward to a veritable smorgasbord of different ephemerid species emerging right through the day.

So I've packed away the size 14/16 LDO imitations for another season and had a look this afternoon at a handful of smaller patterns to suit some of the olives we will be seeing over coming weeks.

I usually rely on three basic templates: klinks, paraduns and cdc duns. The examples below obviously fall into the third category. Every season, Sunday afternoon boredom inspires me to tie a few variants on the cdc theme and these are my troops for the front line attack this year. The first is a #16 and is tied with uprights in mind. The second is a #18 and will serve for medium olives, BWOs and SDOs (although the latter may require scaling down to #20). They will likely account for a fish or two, although whether they prove to be any more effective than my previous years' variants is debatable......but hey, that's one of the joys of rolling yer own!

Most of you will be familiar with the construction of these - it's no secret. But it is a tried and tested formula which has been nobbling river trout around these parts for as long as I can remember.

Matt, you must be a mind reader, I too was a bit bored and decided to tie a few olives for my trip to the Wharfe with Robert on Friday.
They look brilliant mate as usual, so if you don't mind me owd mucker, I am off to copy them right now.

You just can't help yourself can you? Itchy fingers mate? .... or itchy scalp.

What the hook on the upright? Mustad, TMC? Looks like a good gape for mini palmers.

Alex, the hook is a Varivas 2100 series.

Jimmy, the dubbing blend is Masterclass numbers 2 and 3 with a pinch of #8 mixed in at thorax.

Yeah nice hooks Alex. Quite fine in the wire though - don't think they'd stand up to too much big fish abuse. I reckon after a tussle with a 5lb-er would wouldn't so much have sharpness issues as straightness issue!
