Welcome to the black pennel fan club, it has been my favourite and most successful wet fly for years. It works on both river and still waters, my most successful combination on lochs/reservoirs has been a black pennel on the point with a Kate Maclaren on the dropper if one doesn't catch the other one does.

My "jinx" fly has always been the Pheasant tail nymph although I also recently broke my duck on this fly catching a stillwater rainbow on one tied with a grey rabbit fur thorax.

There's always been something about the black pennell that's always made it an addition to my box, wherever I'm fishing. Think it's just one of those flies you've got to have.

Agree 100%. If I could have only one fly that's the one for me. I lived on the west coast of Eire for a good few years and them brownies were fussy enough till I put a Pennel on. They used to scrap over it! Admittedly mainly small stuff but great fun. Yep I'm defo in the BP fan club
Nearly forgot my jinx fly: silver invicta. May as well tie my sock on the end!
