If its "proper" lead, I used to find BB's the most manageable, aaa's were a bit too heavy to cast. Be careful though I think theres a lead shot ban still in force where anglings concerned but dont take my word for it.

I believe there's a ban on weighting lines with it but not for tying flies, we still use lead to weight some flies, cheers ian

The original Dog Nobblers were tied with BB original lead shot on a size 10 hook. I'm not sure what the modern equivelent would be . . . . .

Ian, i would be careful when using split shot as anything above a size 8 in lead is illegal in normal use ,i dont know how you would stand using anything above size 8 in tying and obviously its going to be fixed to the hook ,as size 8 split shot is approx the size of this full stop at the end maybe just slightly bigger .

ian if he is selling split shot in lead above size 8 he himself is breaking the law ,it is outlawed even the selling of it above size 8 and the authorities would take great interest in it i can assure you mate , personally i wouldn't entertain the seller of it but your choice mate ...

PS HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT USING TUNGSTEN PUTTY IAN ...mouldable to any shape or size

The Law states that it is not illegal to incorporate lead into flies and spinning baits .

The right size was always a BB split shot. Hard to find in the UK but commonly available across the rest of the World ( maybe they ain't so pernicketty about waterfowl elsewhere )

But there are masses of alternates to original BB split shot I think I sell maybe 15 variations of assorted sizes of metal dumbells ( very easy to figure 8 tie onto any hook ) that do the job every bit as well and are not in any way leaden - tho I sell a few of those as well as they are not illegal !

Or you could go back to the Original - a Dog Nobbler - which itself was nothing other than a standard marabou tailed Crappie Jig ( a blob of solder on the hook next the eye for the weighted head ) that Fred J.Taylor brought back from the USA and gave to Trevor Housby ( who devised the ' Dog Nobbler' name after he found it worked nicely on stock rainbows )

Trevor eventually sold the rights to the name to Sid Knight ( allegedly for the massive sum of £27.50p - and he also allegedly never got paid for it ! ) And Sid took to writing and threatening one and all for using it - which did him little good as one and all took to calling them Leadheads in very short order !

But you didn't want to know all that !

Best wishes

Steve P
