Default Wee doubles

Years ago wee doubles were quite common when fishing for trout, Kingfisher Butcher, Dunkeld etc used to be popular patterns on Leven. Does anyone still fish them and if so what traditional patterns are still tied on wee doubles.
Cheers
Gerry

The decline in poularity might be to do with an increase in anglers practising catch and release?
I rarely use doubles now even for salmon fishing.

i have the Leven Stinger tied onto a double ( Kamasan B270 size 10 ).
But i want to tie up a few more doubles this winter, i don't know what it is about them but i like the look of a double hook lol.

'Doubles' are seldom seen here in the PNW for two reasons: One is 'required' C & R on many rivers for 'native' fish (no clipped fins) and the cost of the darned things. A 'real double' will cost a minimum of three times what a single point hook will cost. Which has always had me scratching my head as a treble hook is 'cheap as chips.'

Because of the cost, the availability of a double is very limited save for major 'E-tailers.'

The only doubles I use nowadays would be no smaller than a 12.Ive not seen anyone use the proper "wee doubles" i.e 16s and 18s for donkeys years Gerry.I still have a few in a box somewhere but they've not seen the light of day for 30years or more. One or two of the older codgers in our club used to swear by them, especially on Loch Leven and for brownies in general. As is usually the case though with flies, I feel this was probably more to do with the trend among the anglers at the time rather than any preference the trout would have had. I could be wrong though.....maybe its time for a wee double resurgence.....

A bibio on a Kamasan size 14 is an efective pattern for me.

Still use them a lot on leven, sometimes they seem to work better than singles although often just have one on the tail. Best are the Kate, Connemara black, Kingfisher Butcher, wickhams, dunkeld and dunkeld sparkler. Also use them for white cat on menteith. I don't think they damage the fish an more than singles and rarely have any problem removing them, they don't usually go in as deep as singles. Mostly 14's.
