Hi B&B, It's a good idea to avoid black nickel hooks at first when you're learning this technique.... they're very 'slippy'. A standard bronzed hook 'grips' the spanflex better. It is do-able on a black nickel, it just requires some proficiency in the technique to avoid tears! Don't forget... plenty of tension needed to get the process started. As Martin (Troutbum) suggests in the link, chop the 'tail' (waste) after 3 or four wraps - the grip isn't always perfect, and will often loosen very slowly as you complete the fly.... only to ping off

That's part of the reason for chopping the tail off after a couple of turns. If the grip is true, it will withstand the movement of a slight tug on the tail and the chopping off. If it does ping off... no probs, start again... you've only done a couple of turns anyway.
The process is exactly the same using a single strand.
