Default Catching in flexifloss at the bum

Remember a buzzer thread from about a year ago showing technique for doing flexi over bare hook shank - my IT skills aren't letting me find it so any halp would be great.
Cheers

This is the way I tie my buzzers - it gives a very slim profile and I actually did some yesterday in response to word from Grafham that it is fishing its nuts off on buzzers.

I use two contrasting colours of flexifloss so you end up with a ribbed effect, very similar to stripped quill.

Basically it involves wrapping the flexifloss over itself, starting at the bend end and using the shorter end, now trapped to guide the wraps back up the shank, just like you use the loose end of tying thread to guide the bobbin down teh shank when starting a fly.

I prepare by having the bobbin and a few turns on at the eye end so I can trap and tie over the four ends left when I cut off the flexifloss and make a thorax with thread and add wing buds of choice.

Sorry if that is not a great description but I cannot think of a better way to describe it. Easy once you get the hang of it and you can get 3-4 buzzers from a pair of flexifloss strands as you pull it pretty tight.

Hi B&B, It's a good idea to avoid black nickel hooks at first when you're learning this technique.... they're very 'slippy'. A standard bronzed hook 'grips' the spanflex better. It is do-able on a black nickel, it just requires some proficiency in the technique to avoid tears! Don't forget... plenty of tension needed to get the process started. As Martin (Troutbum) suggests in the link, chop the 'tail' (waste) after 3 or four wraps - the grip isn't always perfect, and will often loosen very slowly as you complete the fly.... only to ping off That's part of the reason for chopping the tail off after a couple of turns. If the grip is true, it will withstand the movement of a slight tug on the tail and the chopping off. If it does ping off... no probs, start again... you've only done a couple of turns anyway.
The process is exactly the same using a single strand.

I have actually modified the method a bit and now keep the "short" ends going right upto the thorax - stretched really tight they do not add to the bulk and avoid both the slight bump and any risk of the "pinging" off problem.

Give it a try as an alternative..........................
