Default Hawthorn Fly

Well I've booked a days fishing on the Peacock at Rowsley stretch of the Wye on the 7th of May, which should be bang on time for Hawthorns. So I've knocked up a few flies and I thought I would share them. I tie this up by making a body of furled micro chenille, legs are knotted dyed black pheasant tail, the thorax cover and head is black closed cell foam. The wing is Tiemco Aero wing, I tie it in front of the foam, wrap the hackle around it parachute style and then I push a baiting needle through the foam at the base as close as you can to where it is tied in. Pull the aero wing back through the foam and trim to length. Before the hackle is wrapped round the wing dub with black superfine to cover up the thread wraps. You can tie down the hackle but I haven't because it will be trapped down when the wing is pulled through and the foam is tied down. Tie the foam down forward and pull back to form the head, cut the foam and tie off.

Anyone else got any hawthorn fly patterns to share?

Very nice. Try doing the body with black foam a la ST. If you want to accentuate the legs, knot some turkey biots (from the longer softer side of the feather) and trim to length. The Hawthorn's were out in abundance last Saturday down here.

Not the greatest photo, but you get the idea.

Steve, the only foam body hawthorn I have come across is Oliver Edwards' pattern in masterclass, to me I think the furled chenille is a spot on match for the body.

haresearnotthere, I like that pattern, nice and busy.
