Default One Hundred and One Fly Dressings

I have been given a number fly tying books and in amongst them was the the above produced by E Veniard Ltd.
It doesn't seem particularly old, eg #59 is a Mylar Bodied Jersey Herd and #88is The Polystickle.

What caught my attention was some of the older patterns I had not heard of before. I fancy having a go with the following cast if Spring ever comes

#41 FOOTBALLER
Tying silk: Grey or Dun
Body: Black and White horsehair wound from well round the bend of the hook, to form a slim body of alternate bands of black and white
Thorax: Mole fur
Head: Peacock herl

#51 HARDIES FAVOURITE
Body: Claret floss silk ribbed bronze peacock herl
Wings: From the wing feather of a woodcock
Hackle: Light partridge
Tail: Three or four fibres of golden pheasant tippet

#61 KATE
Body: Halved, the tail end being canary-yellow and the remainder scarlet seal's-fur. The whole ribbed with flat gold tinsel.
Wings: From the fawny-brown feather on a jay's wing.
Hackle: Natural black cock's
Tail: Whole feather of a golden pheasant crest

Anybody come across these and would they be worth a cast?

Billy

The Hardy's Favourite was a great favourite in Orkney. The legendary Billy Sinclair swore by it for peat water lochs.

All pretty much old standards Billy.... you need to get off that island once in while! Then again, if those are the best patterns you'll come across by doing so, then you may as well stay put!

Never tied of fished any of them... The Hardy looks ok, and as Stan says probably worth a chuck in the peatier waters in your neck of the woods.

Never liked the Footballer.... way to contrasty and silly looking for my liking.

The Kate, I believe is the reason some folk get all hot under the collar when one refers to the Kate McLaren as a Kate

Well considering it is over 40years old I am sure it could live with your thoughts Scratch.

Why would I want to get off the Island more often?
100s of brown trout lochs, some of the best Atlantic Salmon systems anywhere, day trips to the Uist Machir lochs, stunning beaches, glorious scenery etc. etc.
The forum gives me access to the cutting edge of new fly design and its only a click away

Billy
