Default Inspiration Needed

Here's my story, Ill keep it as brief as possible.

In my teens to mid 20’s I was a keen fly fisherman and fly tyer (probably better at the tying than the fishing). However at the age of 26 I went to work in Qatar for a couple of years and 22 years later, although I did leave Qatar, I’ve never made it back to the UK, a situation that isn’t likely to change any time soon. Also I haven't been living in countries where trout fishing has been available. I flogged all my fishing gear and books many years ago when my mother moved house and couldn’t store them any more but held onto most of my tying gear, which has been following me around the world ever since.

In 2008 a visiting friend brought me a copy of Fly Fishing & Fly Tying and this sparked my interest in all things fishing and fly tying again (I now subscribe to FF&FT and Trout & Salmon). After purchasing a new vice (and a lot of new materials which weren't used when I last tied in 1987) I entered the 2008/2009 FF&FT fly tying league and finished a credible 10th in the open section, which convinced me that I hadn’t lost the knack. However once the league was over I didn’t have any particular reason to keep tying (there isn’t a lot of trout fishing in the desert) but looked forward to the 2009/2010 league. However the magazine has been arriving too late each month for me to order any materials I need, tie and enter my flies.

So basically my return to fly tying has been very short lived and although I would like to keep tying I don’t have any particular reason to do so.

So does anyone have any suggestions that might galvanise me into action?

What kind of fishings out your way? Could take up the saltwater fly fishing and tying the flies for that?

I'm not a regular subscriber to the mag, but perhaps you know someone in UK who is? Maybe they could scan and email the monthly comp as soon as the mag is published so that you have time to sort out the necessary kit?

Just a thought

Could also look into taking up classic spey and salmon flies. Be a big learning curve for you and i'm sure they rich arabs would like a nice framed full dressed fly.

There are a few people saltwater flyfishing here although it doesn't have great appeal to me. Perhaps I should try it though.

I used to tie some fully dressed salmon flies and I still have a lot of old style salmon fly hooks, though I'd need a lot of practice. Another possibility, thanks.

Default saltwater flyfishing

Jackwow,

Try the saltwater flyfishing it's class and also gives different challenges.I started doing it about 10 years ago and love it.Especially disturbance patterns like poppers.
There's nothing quite like popping a fly through a shoal of mackerel or getting hit by a big pollock or seatrout. The fish tend to be allot bigger and harder fighting than trout!!! I am sure there is predatory fish where you are.

Yeah, do something useful with all that money you've earned (only one reason that Brits hang aroung around the desert for 20 years... isn't there?). Buy Lewis or South Uist or something
