Default Phd (Peter Hayes dun)

As things have become a little slow I thought I'd share a few flies that I fish with, this is the Phd, its one of my most used olive imitations and I tie it in sizes 16 to 20. This fly was featured in FF&FT a few years ago along with a few of Peter Hayes' other patterns

The fly is tied with microfibbets for the tail (on top of a ball of thread), a primrose or yellow silk under body (I use pearsalls), over this is silk again sparsely dubbed with muskrat. I tend to have it really sparse at the tail end so the silk under body really shows through. The wings are mallard flank though I have in the past used lemon duck as well as used a marker to colour the mallard, and I'm sure other duck or game bird feathers would be suitable. These are tied in a split V. The hackle is formed by wrapping the feather around the microfibbet butts as you would parachute style and then you bring the microfibbets between the wing and tie down at the head, no need to tie the hackle down just trim and it will stay trapped. Muskrat is also used for the thorax.

Seanie, it's a great pattern, it's normally my first choice, especially with LDO's and normally don't have to change it but there's a few others that I use just to try something different.

Bruce, I agree, can't quite remember what the actual colour should be, but it is primrose silk that I have and use. I like the colour combination of yellowish silk and grey dubbing (also think waterhen bloa) and a lot of the olive patterns I use feature it.

This fly along with many others is featured in Chris Sandfords new book
"Flytyers Flies :- Flies that catch fish" along with tying instructions.

It was new to me and I have to say I found it quite tricky at first as the paraloop wing around the microfibbet butts was a new technique but once it is mastered it gives a very nice profile and life like sillouette.

Cheers
