Default The Oppo - Jeremy Lucas

Anyone tried this fly or tied it?

Is the thread used the same as Spiderweb ?

You mean a paradun with an orange post? I suspect many many anglers will have fished one of those...although few will have called it 'the oppo'

Matt there a 2 difference i see with the oppo compared with a paradun.
1, Jeremy puts a 30 degree bend in the hook shank, think this is to make it into a semi emerger fly i think.
2, and there are no tails on the oppo.
But agree with you it is more our less a paradun

Those were my thoughts aswell, except for the kink in the hook......does Lucas have history making a big deal of simple things?

Also, it Spiderweb ok for this - i assume so ?

Tks

Spiderweb is fine, as would be any fine thread.

Lucas is a very good angler and I enjoy his articles very much, but he does have a habit of re-inventing the wheel a bit where patterns are concerned. He even tries it a bit in this month's FF&FT with the cdc pattern....before doffing his cap reluctantly to Tyzack.....and that pattern itself is hardly original. Just goes to show that there is little truly new in fly tying - which is fair cop but Lucas has this way of getting very excited about his minor tweaks and variations.

Interesting Matt, I havent got my copy yet but as ever look forward to it. Bearing in mind that I chose my moniker from catching dozens of rainbows on Spiders, I was delighted to catch my first brownies on Spiders tied as (more or less) dries on friday ........I use Tiemco BL hooks or equivalent and they worked well. I'm hoping to get to tie some with some form of CDC thorax ( if I'm capable ) to keep them on the surface longer. So I had a day off on friday, warm weather, Sage SLT 8.5ft 5 wt, Snowbee Geo reel , Mike Barrio line and a few trout to Griffiths and Spiders......happiness is !

Question Trial and error gets you there (eventually)

Hi!

I'm new here but the topic interested me so I would like to give some input on the matter. I've tried to tie the "oppo" but didn't like the results of my trials. Frankly I don't know how many of those that have been cut down to the bare hook again for another trial. The breakthrough came when I got the Benecchi Ghost Thread from Flytek that I had ordered a while ago. I have never used this thread before, even though I've tied flies for almost 40 years, and I found it to be very good. Naturally it wasn't just the thread that made the difference but that made it all come together. I use the Partridge SUD hook which I give a little kink (never tried that before either; at least not with dries). To give the poly post a good look I comb a 6 cm tuft and divide it in half. I tie the thread just barely passing the kink and then back stopping just at the kink. There I tie in the divided tuft of poly at the middle of it on the shank of the hook and after lifting the two ends I wrap half a dozen turns around the base to make them come together. Then I just continue as the description of Jeremy. Finally when the fly is ready I pull the fly gently towards me so I get the point of the hook a little to the left (looking down on the fly; but be very careful, I just broke the hook point of a nice fly trying to overdo it) to give it a little better hooking capabilities. The Knapek nymph hook looks just like that and I imagine that it serves its purpose. Unfortunately I have a medical condition preventing me from fishing (or doing anything) as much as I would like to, so I haven't tried the fly yet. If someone have some input on my way of tying the "oppo" I'd love to hear it. Anyway If you haven't, do try the Benecchi Ghost Thread. I think you'll love it. It's thin, virtually invisible and strong enough for normal fly tying.

Have fun and tight lines,
Mats Olsson

Don't knock Jeremy. If all anglers were as personable as him then it would be a better world as far as fishing is concerned.
