Size 10 just falls in the 5/8th inch gauge Note: I have not got a size 8 to try - Some people bend the eye at times to get the hook to fit the gauge on some doubles!

Regards

Big mouth doubles are intended for tube flies, they have a very wide gape and short shank. If you want competition doubles get the Kamasans in sizes 10 to 14, they are perfect proportions. The other Old Partridge doubles suffered from having the two points too far apart, ie more than 90 degree angle and had to be bent into shape thus weakening them

I don't use many doubles these days except as a point fly when pulling as I prefer to fish 4 flies and obviously with international rules you cant do that and fish a double. I feel that 4 flies gives a much better chance of fish.

Hope this is of use.

Cheers

Agreed you have Kamasan on smaller gape but Partridge have a smaller gape in their HND hook (Heavy Nymph Double) I have a size 14 which well fits in the gauge (maybe a 12 also would fit?) - the gap between the hooks is 4.5/16th (7mm) and this is a very strong hook!
