Default Mosely Style

I've been reading Patsy Deery's book 'Irish Mayflies'. He talks about a 'Mosely' style -'The hackles are then, with the hook reversed, divided underneath and with figure-of-eight turns.' P 147.
I've searched here and came up with Saracen saying to clip the bottom hackles.
Can anyone shed any light on what PD means?
Thanks
Ian

Yes Ian, there are several ways of tying the mosely. Some use the figure of 8 method....under the fly and then over behind the hackle to lift the hackles on the underside. Others (Saracen) just tie a heavier hackle on and then cut the underside.

I prefer to tie in a piece of nymph skin 2-3mm wide depending on the size of the fly or someting in the same colour as the body in a plastic/durable material on the underside of the hook behind the hackle. Once I finish winding on the head hackle I pull the material towards the eye on the undderside of the body and then tie it off. This will split and push the hackles to the side the same as the figure of 8 or cutting would.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ian

I tie mine much the same way as Dibbler explains only I use cock pheasant tail fibres.
Tie them in on the underside and wind on your hackles pull your cock pheasant tail towards the eye which splits the hackles.

Hope this helps

I tie a tapered strip of foam in along the underside of the shank so that it is fully compressed before the dubbing. This adds very little bulk, but helps the body remain buoyant. The "stub end" is then used to replace the figure of 8 threads when hackling. Not only is this neater, but no thread is exposed to the trouts teeth so it's a bit more durable. Either yellow or green foam is used, so that as well as acting like another floatation sack it may also look like an egg sack when it's tied off at the underside of the head. I published this idea several years ago in Flyfishing & Flyting, calling it a "Bubble-butt".

Mosely May Wulff - tying by Davie Mc Phail on Youtube.

He doesn,t use hackle dividing techniques on this, but i thought it would add some interest. Particularly impressive is how he crams so much hackle into the small space behind the eye!
